Weamouth-Jarrow is the UK Government's 2011 Candidate for World Heritage Status, and the Parish of Monkwearmouth is one of the partners in that bid. For more information on the Bid visit the Wearmouth-Jarrow website.
Monastic Footprint and More
After years of effort, the outline of the excavated seventh century monastic buildings on the St. Peter's, Monkwearmouth part of the Wearmouth-Jarrow , is now shown in paving blocks and glass on the surface of the ground. This outline is based on Professor Rosemary Cramp's long-term archaeological endaevours, and the footprint has been marked out through the generosity of Northumbria Water. Now visitors have opportunity to gain more sense of the significance of this World Heritage Candidate site. In the next months the visual impact of this resource will be complemented by new interpretative work currently being designed for the Wearmouth-Jarrow Partnership by the companies Bright white and Numiko.
